Are you downloading the files from a SFTP or FTP server?

What is the server software? Is it a windows based server?

Any idea what FTP server software is being used?

Typically this can be determined by the first few lines of text in the session window.

I suspect the ftp server software is configured to treat ASCII transfers as BINARY, so even though FlashFXP thinks you are transferring the files in ASCII mode the FTP server is treating them as BINARY.

FTP server software used in cpanel is Pure-FTPD and pro-FTPD. Currently we have Pure-FTPD running in our server. We will have a check into this and update you soon.

Here I bring my server admin response:

====================================

Hello,

In ASCII the transferred data is considered to contain only ASCII formatted text. The receiver have to translate the format of the received text, only then it would be readable by his OS. For instance in windows system, pressing the "enter" key inserts two characters in an ASCII text document - a carriage return (which places the cursor at the beginning of the line) and a line feed (which places the cursor on the line below the current one). On UNIX systems, only a line feed is used. ASCII text formatted for use on UNIX systems does not display properly when viewed on a Windows system and vice versa.

In Binary transfer file is transfered as binary data (0 and 1). In binary mode file is transmitted as raw formats ie it is transfered in its exact form.
It is better to use ASCII for transferring .txt, htm, html, css, htm, html, css. If a file containinf binary data is transfered in ASCII then chances of file to get corrupted are high.

In most of the ftp clients we have option to change the transfer modes. I hope you are satisfied with this reply.

Sean

Yes that is correct.. If you upload a DOS formatted text file in ASCII mode to a UNIX based server it will automatically convert the DOS text format to UNIX text format.

If you then download the same file using ASCII mode it will convert text file which is now UNIX formatted back to a DOS formatted text file.

If the file is at any point downloaded in BINARY mode then it gets remains UNIX formatted, depending on your text editor it may handle UNIX formatted text just fine, such as Ultra Edit or my personal favorite NotePad++

Perhaps at some point the file format became messed up?

NotePad++ can convert the file from DOS to UNIX or UNIX to DOS. I would convert the file to DOS formatted and then upload it to your server and see if that resolve it.

If it doesn't resolve it, then I would re-evaluate whether or not the FTP server is actually using ASCII mode. There are some FTP servers that will use BINARY mode even when ASCII is selected.

Please tell me if there some setting I should change at the software I am using.

If there something related to the server which should be changed so please tell me so I can tell my server admin what to do.

Thanks again.

Notepad++ will indicate the text file format on the status-bar.

To convert Dos\Windows to UNIX do the following.

The file is UNIX formatted.
